Wind Tales

Game Development Portfolio

During the internship in the 3rd year of my study I interned at Wind Tales B.V. and worked on two projects: Wind Tales and Revalair. Wind Tales and Revalair are both applied games for lung patients. Wind Tales is for children with Cystic Fibrosis and Revalair is for older adults with COPD. Both games are played with a controller and with a spirometer that is controlled by the player’s breath.

What I worked on in Wind Tales:

  • A bit of UI.
  • Researching solutions and suggesting fixes for some major bugs.
  • Fixing bugs.
  • Reworked the walljump mechanic in the game to be more smooth.
  • Communicating with a plugin developer to find a fix for a bug with the plugin in the project.

What I worked on in Revalair:

  • A bit of UI.
  • Adapted Wind Tales for a much older target audience where most have never played a game.
  • Reworked the game controls to be controlled by 1 button instead of 4 to make it easier for the target audience.
  • Researched controllers to find a suitable controller for the target audience.
  • Making the game as customizable as possible for users.

Focus of the project:

  • Showing what I learned so far.
  • Improving personal communication skills.
  • Improving personal planning skills.
  • Improving programming skills.
  • Working in a multidisciplinary team with professionals.

What I learned:

  • Communicating more efficiently with colleagues.
  • Many best practices of working on a Unity project.
  • How to make UI that is nice for the eye.
  • Working with Agile SCRUM, how to communicate my daily tasks in a stand-up and planning my tasks efficiently.
  • How to perform useful user tests.
  • The importance of the target audience an clearly defining them.
